Laurence E. Norton

Laurence E. Norton, 88, formerly of Partridge Road, died Sunday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox, where he had resided since 2003.

Prior to moving to Kimball Farms, he had lived in Pittsfield for 43 years.

Born in Strong, Maine, on April 29, 1917, son of E. Spaulding Norton and Rosie F. Pike Norton Lees, he was educated there and was a 1934 graduate of Strong High School.

In 1936, he graduated from Coyne Electrical & Radio School in Chicago.

Mr. Norton was employed by GE in ordnance systems as a senior designer for 43 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of United Methodist Church of Lenox. At one time, he was a very active member of the former Trinity Methodist Church in Pittsfield, where he sang bass in the choir for many years. While in Myrtle Beach, S.C., for 20 years, he was a member of the Socastee United Methodist Church.

He was also a member of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers. He enjoyed flowers, birds, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

His wife, the former Crystal O. Withey, whom he married Aug. 6, 1939 in New Vineyard, Maine, died Dec. 14, 2000.

He leaves a son, Allen E. Norton of Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Judith A. Rufo of Lenox, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Laurence E. Norton, 88, a longtime Pittsfield resident who died Sept. 25, 2005, will be Thursday at 11 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, conducted by the Rev. Eric Dupee, pastor of United Methodist Church of Lenox. Following cremation, burial will take place in the Strong Village Cemetery in Strong, Maine.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 10 to 11, prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Norton also leaves his six grandchildren, Sheryl Rufo Iodice, Krisann Rufo Bush, Bliss Rufo Nugent, Jeffrey Rufo, Kirstin Norton Jenkins and Jody Norton Blackwell. He was a gentle, kind and humble man who will always be remembered for his dry sense of humor. He was predeceased by his stepfather, John Lees, and by two brothers ands a sister.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to United Methodist Church of Lenox Endowment Fund in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
