Joan H. Sykes, 72, of Northport, Fla., formerly of Pittsfield, died Monday at Venice Regional Medical Center, Venice, Fla.
Born in Pittsfield on April 24, 1933, she was the daughter of Thomas F. and Katherine O. Higgins.
A homemaker, Mrs. Sykes offered many years of community service to the town of Vernon, Conn., where she resided for 45 years.
She was a winter resident of Northport since 1994, and moved there year-round in 2002.
She leaves her husband of 52 years, Franklin G. Sykes of Northport; a son, Brian F. Sykes of Concord, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 30, between 6 and 9 p.m. at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield. Liturgy of Christian Burial will begin at the funeral home at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, and services will continue with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church, North Street, Pittsfield, at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery.
Memorial donations in the name of Joan Sykes can be made either to the American Red Cross-Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund, 2001 Cantu Court, Sarasota, FL 34232 or the American Lung Association 2201 Cantu Court, Suite 119, Sarasota, FL 34232.
She also leaves a daughter-in-law, Maryrose Sykes, and two grandchildren, Christopher and Kevin, all of Concord, and many close friends and relatives.
