Ruth Sutherland Filkins

Ruth Sutherland Filkins, 86, of Kimball Farms died early Monday morning at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield from injuries sustained in a car accident in Lenox on Sunday afternoon.

She was a former resident of Baldwin Hill in South Egremont.

Born in Yonkers, N.Y., on June 6, 1919, daughter of Herbert Irving and Margaret Morrison Sutherland, she graduated from schools in New York. She received her bachelor's degree from Simon's Rock College of Bard in Great Barrington, and a master's of fine arts from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt.

She also studied at Oxford University in England.

During World War II, Mrs. Filkins worked for the British embassy in New York. She also taught English for several years at Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield.

She was a volunteer for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, and enjoyed reading and playing bridge.

She and her husband, Walter L. Filkins Jr., were married Oct. 30, 1943, at The Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. The couple made their home in Chappaqua, N.Y., until moving to South Egremont in 1981. Mr. Filkins died Nov. 22, 1986.

She leaves her daughter Ruth-Ellen Blodgett of Cape Vincent, N.Y.; two sons, Walter Filkins of Block Island, R.I., and James Filkins of North Egremont; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial gathering to celebrate the life of Ruth S. Filkins will be held Sunday at 2 at Kimball Farms.

A private burial will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Yonkers. There will be no calling hours.

She also leaves a son-in-law, John Blodgett, and two daughters-in-law, Debbie Filkins and Ginny Filkins. She was predeceased by her sister, Bernice Stark, and her brother, Herbert I. Sutherland Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, in care of FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
