William J. Higgins

William J. Higgins, 86, of 140 Melbourne Road died Thursday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 20, 1919, son of William and May McCormick Higgins, he was valedictorian of the class of 1937 at St. Joseph's High School.

Mr. Higgins was employed by GE for 52 years, retiring in 1989 from the purchasing department.

A lifelong communicant of St. Joseph's Church, he volunteered as an usher for many years as well as in the collection and counting of the parish weekly offerings.

He enjoyed dining out and, together with his twin brother, the late John Higgins, was featured in "New Yorker" magazine and in newspaper articles about Joe's Diner as a "must stop" in Lee.

He also enjoyed visiting the beach and Claridge Casino in Atlantic City.

He leaves a brother, Francis J. Higgins of Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William J. Higgins, 86, who died Sept. 22, 2005, will be Monday at 9, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph's Church Improvement Fund in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.

A gentleman, he will be greatly missed by his sister-in-law, Barbara M, Higgins; his nephews, Michael F. Higgins of Pittsfield and Richard C. Higgins and his wife, Wanda Higgins, of Richmond, and his grandnieces, Heidi M. Orth of Richmond and Kristy D. Higgins of Middletown, Conn.
