Elizabeth Ann Smitherman

Elizabeth Ann Smitherman, 85, of 176 Columbus Ave., Berkshiretown Apartments, died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Reidsville, N.C., on Aug. 26, 1920, daughter of Andrew and Mamie Harrison Powell, she moved to Pittsfield at age 3 and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939.
Mrs. Smitherman was employed as a wirer at GE. She retired after many years of service.
She was a member of South Congregational Church, where she was chairwoman of the ushers' board, served on the Search Committee and Mission in Action board, and was a past trustee.
A member of the Order of Eastern Star, she was a past worthy matron, conductress, association conductress and association matron, and past grand chapter officer. She enjoyed bowling, shopping and using the computer.
Her husband, Eddie Smitherman, whom she married Feb. 4, 1967, died May 31, 1983.
She leaves two sons, Irvin L. Powell Sr. of Alpharetta, Ga., and Gregory Powell of Pittsfield; two daughters, Yvonne E. Sherman of Windsor, Conn., and Judith A. Hallums of Clinton, Md.; 11 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Elizabeth A. Powell Smitherman, who died Sept. 16, 2005, will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 21, at noon at Second Congregational Church on Onota Street by the Rev. Leonard C. Comithier and the Rev. Willard Durant. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 10 to noon at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Second Congregational Church or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., which is handling arrangements.
She is lovingly survived by 11 grandchildren, Tujuna Powell Beda, Orrin Powell, Lamar Powell, Ayana Brown, Bakari Brown, Deanna Powell, Irvin Lee Powell Jr., Diana Powell, Xylona Powell, Cyonna Hallums and Alonna Hallums, and by her six cherished great-grandchildren, MaLeek Powell, Meyah Powell, Jamal Beda, Lakaria Brown, Ladalia Brown and Khalil Powell. Also survived by daughter-in-law, Josephine Powell; two sons-in-law, David Sherman and Glen Hallums; four nephews; a niece; great-nieces and -nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her sister, Nannie Powell.
