George T. King

George T. King, 73, of 40 Stearns Ave. died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 20, 1932, son of Howard J. and Laura B. Chase Hoag King, he was a 1950 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served on board the USS Missouri.

Mr. King was a police officer with the City of Pittsfield from 1956 to 1968. He then worked at G.E., retiring as a security officer in 1995 after 25 years of service. After his retirement he worked at Stop & Shop for the last two years.

He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church, and a member of VFW Post 448 of Pittsfield.

He wrote poetry, built scale model ships, played the guitar and enjoyed country western music.

He and his wife, the former Doris J. Rathbun, would have celebrated 51 years of marriage on Oct. 30. They were married in 1954 at St. Mark's Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Mark R. King of Pittsfield; a daughter, Sheryl A. Suprenant of Southwick; three brothers, Kenneth V. Hoag, John H. King and Donald R. King, all of Pittsfield, and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for George T. King, who died peacefully on Monday evening surrounded by his loving family, will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., with the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor of St. Mark's Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Saint Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at funeral home will be Thursday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, and will be sadly missed by all who loved him. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold "Hap" King and William R. Hoag, and by a sister, Helen Hoag Russo.
