Anthony Rufo

Anthony Rufo, 84, of 160 East Slope Road died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 7, 1921, son of Antonio and Mary DeSenna Rufo, he was educated in local schools.

He had resided in Richmond for 31 years.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 301st Infantry Division.

Mr. Rufo owned and operated two Midas Muffler shops, one in Pittsfield and the other in Rensselaer, N.Y. He first operated Rufo Muffler, then bought the Midas franchises. He retired in 1996 after 40 years in the business.

He was a Red Sox fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, gardening, boating and making wine.

He also owned thoroughbred horses for many years, racing them at Lincoln Downs, Narragansett and the former Green Mountain race tracks.

He and his wife, the former Angelina Stracuzzi, were married April 27, 1974.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Sharon L. White of New Lebanon, N.Y.; two sons, Anthony C. "Tinker" Rufo and Donald P. Rufo both of New Lebanon, N.Y.; four stepdaughters, Patricia R. Makes of Southport, Conn., Susan R. Pivero and JoAnne Consolini, both of Pittsfield, and Gina M. Jennings of Granby, Conn.; a stepson, Peter S. Rapkowicz of Pittsfield; a brother, Daniel Rufo of Edgewater, Fla.; two sisters, Rose Hess ofOregon and Ann Brown of Pittsfield; 18 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. His former wife, the former Harriet Williams, died Jan. 6, and a son, Mark A. Rufo, died March 12, 1990.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Anthony Rufo, 84, of Richmond who died Sept. 3, 2005 will be Thursday at 8:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Wednesday, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Mr. Rufo also was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund through the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
