Americo "Merc" G. Contenta, 76, of 58 Valentine Road died Sunday at Laurel Lake Center in Lee.
Born in Sonnino, province of Latina, Italy, on Oct. 26, 1928, son of Augusto and Esther DiMicco Contenta, he emigrated to Pittsfield when he was an infant.
He was a 1948 graduate Pittsfield High School, where he was president of his class.
A self-employed carpenter for 40 years, he retired in 1988.
He was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of local Carpenters' Union 108.
He enjoyed going to Narragansett Beach in Rhode Island.
He and his wife, the former Josephine M. DeCario, were married Dec. 1, 1951.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, David A. Contenta of Wethersfield, Conn., and Frank J. Contenta of Richmond; two daughters, Kathleen M. Kowalczyk of Suffield, Conn., and Victoria C. Janeczek of Hampden; a sister, Mary R. Baccoli of Lee, and nine grandchildren.

Contenta, Frank J. Contenta, Kathleen M. Kowalczyk, Victoria C. Janeczek. Loving grandfather of Brian, Nicholas, Ashley, Lauren and Paige Contenta, Jennifer and Lindsay Janeczek, Joseph and Matthew Kowalczyk. Dear brother of Mary R. Baccoli.
Father-in-law to Karen Contenta, Joseph Kowalczyk, Kenneth A. Janeczek. Predeceased by a brother, Joseph A. Contenta. The funeral will be tomorrow, Sept. 7, at 9 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.
Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Tuesday, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Mount Carmel Ladies' Guild will meet at 6 at the funeral home for a vigil service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation in care of the funeral home. Americo's main interest in life was his family, relatives and close friends. His grandchildren brought him many hours of happiness.
