Dominic Joseph Mangano

Dominic Joseph Mangano, 92, of 129 Plunkett St. died Wednesday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Palermo, Sicily, on March 12, 1913, son of Michael and Rosalia Ferrante Mangano, he and his family came to the United States when he was two years old. He attended Pittsfield schools.

Mr. Mangano was employed as a material follower in ordnance systems division at GE for 16 years. For many years, he was also a salesman for cars, vacuum cleaners and appliances. He retired in 1977.

A longtime musician known as "Fingers," he began his career at the Boys' Club, playing the piano for silent movies at age 14. He also played with the former Sammy Vincent Orchestra, the Hill City Six, and had his own orchestra, The Dom Mangano Orchestra, for many years. He played piano for Senior Center dances, entertained patients in local nursing homes, and, for 23 years, played the piano for the Pittsfield Rotary Club.

He was a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church, where he was a volunteer for bingo and the coffee shop. He was also a volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for 15 years.

He was a member of the GE Pensioners' Club, the Musicians Union, a past president of the Bobby Kidney Sunshine Club, and a life member of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564 and the Italian-American Club. He enjoyed playing cards, bocci, and bowled in two leagues until the age of 88.

He and his wife, the former Hilda Palardy, were married Nov. 23, 1935, at the former Notre Dame Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Michael P. Mangano of Dalton, John J. Mangano of Dalton and Paul F. Mangano of Harbin, China; four daughters, Lorraine Anderson of Lynn, Rosalie Polcaro of Pittsfield, Valerie Ebling of Lakewood, Calif., and Carole Anderson of Lanesborough, 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Dominic Joseph Mangano, who died Wednesday, Aug. 31, will be Saturday, Sept. 3, at 8:15 from the DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be today, Friday, from 4 to 8 at the funeral home. Members of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge will conduct its ritual service at 6 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bobby Kidney Sunshine Fund, the Dalton Lions Club, or to the Ralph Froio Senior Center, all in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St.

He also leaves his sons-in-law, Arnold O. Anderson, David J. Polcaro, Dale D. Ebling and George "Pete" Anderson, and his daughters-in-law, Janice (Mrs. Michael), Dolores (Mrs. John), and Olimpia (Mrs. Paul). He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank Mangano and Bartolomeo "Chilly" Mangano, and a sister, Mary LaRosa.
