Sadie M. "Sandy" Wowk, 85, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., died Sunday at Eden Park in Poughkeepsie after a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on April 5, 1920, daughter of Jacob and Mary Wowk, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School and the former Pittsfield Secretarial School.
Ms. Wowk owned and operated the former Wowk Jewelers in the former Wendell Sheraton Hotel for 14 years. Before that, she worked in the personnel department at GE in the plastics division. In 1958, she joined IBM in Harrison, N.J., in various administrative positions for corporate staff until retiring in 1985.
She was active in many local fund-raising drives and received several awards for her volunteer work. She was a past member of the Pittsfield Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Berkshire Country Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Greylock Ski Club.
She enjoyed skiing, cooking, playing golf, flower arranging and traveling.
Ms. Wowk was a tour director for many European trips with the Westchester Gadabouts in White Plains, N.Y.
She was a Red Sox fan and enjoyed attending school sport activities.
She leaves two sisters, Katherine A. Maggiacomo and Olga Carmel, both of Poughkeepsie, and a brother, John Wowk of East Dover, Vt.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Mass of Christian Burial for Sadie M. "Sandy" Wowk will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 1, at 10 at St. Martin de Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie.
There will be no calling hours. Friends and relatives are invited to attend graveside services at 1 at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield. The Rev. Robert Markovitch, M.D., pastor of St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church, will officiate at the prayer service.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Attn: Memorial Donations Dept., 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
She was predeceased by a brother, Nicholas van Wowk, and by two sisters, Jane Wowk and Stephanie Zack.
