Walter Berezowskyj Jr., 58, of 1055 North St. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center after suffering an apparent heart attack.
He had resided in Pittsfield for 10 years and in the Berkshires for 18 years.
Born in Regeusburg, Germany on Sept. 8, 1946 to Walter Berezowskyj Sr. and Katyrina Derenko Berezowskyj, he came to the United States in 1949, first settling in Tutwieller, Miss.
He then moved to Guilford, Conn., where he graduated from Guilford High School in 1964. He also attended the University of New Haven.
He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
At the time of his death, he had been employed by Home Depot and also as a counselor at Barton's Crossing homeless shelter for seven years. He worked for U.S. Steel for 30 years in Houston and in New Haven, Conn. He also worked for four years as an independent broker for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.
After attending college, he became involved with 4-H as a leader and then with the International Farm Youth Exchange program, which brought him to India for a year to teach agriculture to undeveloped villages.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Church in Pittsfield and St. Michael's Ukrainian Church in New Haven. He was a member of the Guilford Agricultural Society and the American Bantam Association.
He enjoyed rebuilding automobiles, doing carpentry and gardening. He was also fluent in many languages.
He leaves his wife, the former Mary Dora Ryan, whom he married on June 2, 1973, in St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Bridgeport, Conn.
Besides his parents, of Guilford, and his wife, he leaves two sons, Walter J. Berezowskyj of Pittsfield and David Smith of California; two daughters, Julia K. Berezowskyj and Lesia Berezowskyj, both of Pittsfield; two brothers, Bohdan Berezowskyj of Madison, Conn., and Dr. Yv Murty of Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters, Stephanija Berezowskyj and Darka Lindgren, both of Guilford; and a granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Walter Berezowskyj Jr. of Pittsfield died Aug. 16, 2005. Calling hours will be Thursday at the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., from 4 to 8. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to establish an education fund for his granddaughter, Nadya M. LaPlante, in care of the Berkshire Bank of Pittsfield.
Walter is also lovingly survived by four nephews, William Disotell Jr., Bohdan Disotell, Joseph Lawson and Aart VanWilgen IV; and two nieces, Aldis and Julia Berezowskyj; and by a cousin, Halya Famiglietti.
He was predeceased by a brother, Myroslaw Berezowskyj, who died in 1998.
