Mary Ann Coons, 71, of 2 Dogwood Lane died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness.
Born in Manchester, Conn., on May 19, 1934, daughter of Lionel W. and Anne Welsh Delesdernier, she was educated there. She later moved to Springfield, where she was a 1952 graduate of the former Commerce High School.
She also attended Berkshire Community College. She had resided in West Springfield for more than 10 years before moving to the Berkshires in 1971.
Mrs. Coons was employed as a school bus driver by the city of Pittsfield, retiring in September 1999 after 10 years of service. Before that, she was a receptionist for a private medical practice in the Springfield area.
She was a member of the Pittsfield Bus Drivers Union and enjoyed watching figure skating and Nascar and making trips to Foxwoods Casino.
In her younger years, she enjoyed roller skate dancing.
She and her husband, Roy M. Coons, were married April 9, 1961, in Enfield, Conn. He died Sept. 18, 1986.
She leaves a son, Steven V. Coons of Pittsfield; two daughters, Linda A. Litano and Laura L. Spence, both of Pittsfield; a brother, William Delesdernier of Portland, Conn.; a sister, Joan Ernsting of East Longmeadow, and six grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mary Ann Coons, 71, was called safely home on Aug. 14, 2005. A funeral and celebration of her life will be held Wednesday at 11 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 9 until the service. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home. "Nana" will be missed by her loving grandchildren, Rebecca Wehry, Mike and Katie Litano, Kayla Benoit, Steve Jr. and Jack Spence.
She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Janelle L. Coons; son-in-law, Stephen P. Spence; sister-in-law, Nellie Delesdernier, and brother-in-law, Carl Ernsting. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and for being a "scrappy" lady who had a zest for life.
She was predeceased by her stepfather, Alfred M. Steele.
