Ruth Maness Elmer, 91, of 89 South St. died Monday at Berkshire Place.
Born in Elon College, N.C., daughter of the Rev. W.L. and Beulah McNeill Maness, she attended schools there.
She graduated from Greensboro College and attended Duke University and New York State University at Albany for graduate studies.
Mrs. Elmer taught high school English in Bethel and Taylorsville, N.C., and was a first-grade teacher for 20 years in Averill Park, N.Y.
She enjoyed reading and playing croquet.
She and her husband, Robert W. Elmer, were married 52 years before his death Aug. 31, 1992.
She leaves a daughter, Virginia Karis of Dalton; a son, Robert E. Elmer of Bucks Harbor, Maine; a brother, William H. Maness of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Ruth Maness Elmer will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 20, at 10 at St. Stephen's Church, Pittsfield, by the Rev. Gay Rahn officiating.
A burial service will be held at a later date at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Robbins, N.C. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the W.L. and Beulah McNeill Maness Scholarship Fund at Elon University in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.
Survivors include grandchildren Charles and Eva Elmer, and Benjamin and Timothy Karis, and great-grandchildren Charles and Grace Elmer. She was predeceased by two brothers, Dr. Paul Maness and Edwin Maness, and a sister, Sarah Cramer.
