William R. Sage

William R. Sage, 92, of Devonshire Estates, formerly of South Mountain Road, died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in New Haven, Conn., on June 19, 1913, son of Salvatore and Jennie Sagnella, he graduated in 1932 from Commercial High School, where he was class president, and in 1933 from New Haven Business College.
Mr. Sage had his own orchestra in New Haven and led the Paul Fuller Band at the Roger Sherman Ballroom. He also sang on radio station WELI.
He was employed by the former Consolidated Motor Lines, transferring to Pittsfield in 1940 as manager of its division here. The company became part of Associated Transport in 1942. He retired in 1974 with 40 years of service. From 1974 to 1983, he was manager of Consolidated Freightways at Downing Industrial Park.
Mr. Sage was past president of the Berkshire County Traffic Association, past exalted ruler of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, past president of Berkshire Hills Country Club and a past president of the Businessmen's League.
He was a communicant of South Congregational Church.
He and his wife, the former Velma Schile, were married Nov. 21, 1938. She died March 21, 2001.
He leaves a daughter, Sage Leigh Stetson (Lori Leigh Sage) of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Brindisi and Lucille LaVorgna, both of West Haven, Conn., and a brother, Raymond Sagnella of Cranston, R.I.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for William Sage, who died Aug. 1, 2005, will be conducted Saturday at 10 at South Congregational Church in Pittsfield by the Rev. Joel Huntington, pastor.
Following cremation, burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to South Congregational Church, 110 South St. WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, is in charge of arrangements.
