Florence T. Young

Florence T. Young, 87, of 194 Allengate Ave. died Thursday at home.

Born in Canton on March 14, 1918, daughter of Jeremiah F. and Katherine Monaghan McCarthy she was a graduate of St. John's High School in Canton and Burdett College in Boston.

She moved to Pittsfield in 1950.

Mrs. Young was an administrative assistant to the chief probation officer of the Berkshire County Superior Court Probation Office from 1972 to 1986.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Family Society, and a member of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts.

She enjoyed reading, keeping up on current events and traveling.

She and her husband, John V. Young Sr., a longtime funeral director at the former Meehan Funeral Home on South Street in Pittsfield, were married Feb. 23, 1941, at St. John's Church in Canton. He died Jan. 29, 1994.

She leaves four sons, Dr. John V. Young Jr. of Eugene, Ore., Kevin P. Young of Lanesborough, Robert E. Young of Pittsfield and Stephen P. Young of Worthington; a brother, Philip E. McCarthy of Weymouth; a sister, Winifred Gibson of Canton; 13 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Florence T. Young, who died Thursday, July 21, 2005, will be Monday, July 25, at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary the Morning Star Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 2 to 6 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Young may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.

Mrs. Young is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
