Richard G. "Bud" Vickery

Richard G. "Bud" Vickery, 68, of 30 Lucille St. died Friday at home after a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 21, 1937, son of Winfred and Nellie Houghtlin Vickery, he was educated in local schools and started his lifelong career as a groundskeeper at the Country Club of Pittsfield as a teenager.
He served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and the National Guard of the United States from 1955 to 1958 with Company I 104th Infantry, then re-enlisted in the Army National Guard, serving from 1958 until his discharge in 1963.
Mr. Vickery was employed by the state of New York as groundskeeper for the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center for more than 15 years, retiring in 1995.
After his retirement, he was a van driver for Berkshire Community Action Council until illness forced him to retire in 2003. Before that, he lived in Millbrook, N.Y., where he was a caretaker for many local estates, including that of television personality Mary Tyler Moore.
He worked independently for more than 14 years in the Millbrook area before moving to Dover Plains, N.Y.
He was a member of the Civil Service Employees Association AFSCME, AFL-CIO 1000, in New York for many years.
He enjoyed hunting, camping and traveling to Lake George, N.Y.
He and his wife, the former Anne M. Sitzman, were married May 2, 1960, in Canaan, N.Y. She died in May 1999.
He leaves four daughters, Barbara A. Leger, Tracey L. Way and Linda L. Wood, all of Pittsfield, and Kellie A. Wood of Dover Plains, N.Y.; two sisters, Dorothy Butler of Pittsfield and Terry Hadsell of Housatonic; a brother, David Vickery of Housatonic; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Richard G. "Bud" Vickery, 68, was called safely home on July 22, 2005. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 5 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave.
A funeral and celebration of his life will be conducted Tuesday at 11 at the funeral home by the Rev. William D. Furey. Burial will be in Hancock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home. He will be missed dearly by his dear cousins and extended family.
"Bud" will be remembered for his smiles, laughter and enjoyment of life.
