Edward A. Sherman

Edward A. Sherman, 71, of 46 Elaine Drive died Friday morning at home.
Born in Lanesborough on March 11, 1934, son of Rolland and Mary LeBarron Sherman, he was a 1952 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He earned an associate degree with honors from Berkshire Community College in 1972 and a bachelor's degree with honors from the University of Massachusetts in 1976.
An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he served from 1952 to 1957 and was discharged as a sergeant. While in the service, he formed a two-man drill team and traveled throughout the world.
Mr. Sherman was appointed to the Pittsfield Police Department on Nov. 20, 1966. He rose from patrolman to detective to sergeant, retiring in 1995. In 1979, he initiated the Crime Watch Program and was elected vice president of the Massachusetts Crime Watch Association in 1980. He received a commendation for an act of bravery in 1969 in the robbery of the former Big N department store.
In 1982, he was recognized as an outstanding police officer in the field of bank crime investigation by the Massachusetts Bankers Association. In 199,3 he was awarded a life-saving award.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of the Air Force Presidential Honor Guard Association of Washington, D.C.
He was a life member of American Legion Post 68 and of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448.
He and his wife, the former Sylvia Kolner, were married June 20, 1964, in New Lebanon, N.Y.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Christine Sherman and Tracy Lynn Tracy, both of Pittsfield; a son, Edward Sherman of Pittsfield; a sister, Gertrude Derby of Hancock, and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Edward A. Sherman died in Pittsfield on Friday, July 22. Beloved grandfather to Sarina Tracy, Christopher Tracy and Carmen Sherman; loving father-in-law to Christopher Tracy. The funeral will be Tuesday, July 26, at 10 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, July 25, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jordan Tracy, in 1996 and by a sister, Shirley Pianpiano in 1995.
He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
