Alfred N. Daily

Alfred N. Daily, 83, of 103 Hancock Road and Sarasota, Fla., died Thursday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 3, 1922, son of Edward F. and Anna Dillon Daily, he attended schools there and was a 1940 graduate of Manual Training High School.

He also earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1944 from Manhattan College, where he competed with the NCAA track team. After college, he ran with the New York Athletic Club.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving 1944 to 1945. He then served from 1945 to 1946 in the Army, where he was a technician 4th grade assigned to the finance accounting auditing section at Fort Dix, N.J. He also organized, managed and coached the Fort Dix track team with a squad of 35 men.

After the service, Mr. Daily joined the family business, Daily's Hardware in Brooklyn. He later became the owner and operator, retiring in 1984.

He was a daily communicant and eucharistic minister at St. Charles' Church. While in Florida, he was a communicant of Incarnation Church.

He was a member of American Legion Post 27 in Brooklyn and enjoyed volunteering as an usher at Vanwezel Performing Arts Center and as a track coach at Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota.

His wife, the former Mary L. Hutchinson, whom he married Sept. 3, 1951, died Sept. 1, 1995.

He leaves a daughter, Nancy Plantz of Pittsfield; four sons, Alfred J. Daily of Orinda, Calif., Paul Daily of Lake Grove, N.Y., Edward F. Daily of Phoenix and John C. Daily of Morristown, N.J., and six grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Alfred N. Daily, 83, will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 at St. Charles' Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will be Thursday in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
