William Turbin

William Turbin, 96, of Devonshire Estates, 329 Pittsfield Road, died Tuesday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted July 1.
Born in Manhattan on July 6, 1909, son of Samuel and Pauline Belford Turbin, he graduated from Seward Park High School there and attended City College of New York.
Mr. Turbin was employed by Consolidated Edison Electric Co. in New York. He also operated his own business, Souvenir Sales Co. of New York, for many years.
He became a magician at age 70 and performed for youth organizations and hospitals in New York. He was a regular magician in the New York City Library System and performed in various venues throughout the region, including the Berkshires.
He enjoyed writing essays and poems and essays, some of which were put to music.
His poem about Martin Luther King was published in the Amsterdam News in New York City and in several other newspapers.
His wife, the former Ruth Fiedler, whom he married in 1939, died in 1991.
He leaves twin sons, Ronald Turbin of Williamstown and Richard Turbin of Honolulu; a daughter, Carole Turbin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Marian Kokot of Stamford, Conn., five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William Turbin will be Friday, July 15, 2005, at 1 at Gutterman's Funeral Home, 175 Long Beach Road, Rockville Centre, N.Y. Burial will follow in the family lot in Mount Ararat Cemetery, North Lindenhurst, N.Y.
The family will receive friends Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 9 at the home of Carole Turbin, 374 11th St., Brooklyn, N.Y. Memorial donations may be made to North Adams Regional Hospital in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
