Ralph S. Rod

Ralph S. Rod, 67, of 439 Oakhill Road and 93 Shore Drive died on Thursday evening at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center following a long illness.
Born in Gardner, Jan. 29, 1938, son of Sigurd and Tyyne A. Suronen Rod, he attended schools there and was a 1956 graduate of Templeton High School.
Continuing his education, he graduated from the former North Adams State College in 1977.
Mr. Rod served in the Massachusetts National Guard as a squad leader from 1961 until 1966.
He was employed as an engineering technician in the former ordnance department at General Electric, now General Dynamics, for more than 40 years, retiring in the late 1990s.
A member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, he was also a former member of the Booster Club.
He enjoyed thoroughbred horseracing and trips to Saratoga Raceway, fishing, hunting, hiking, traveling, and all sports.
He was a loyal Red Sox fan.
He and his wife, the former Shirley Wellspeak, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on May 29.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Darryl Rod of Cheshire; a daughter, Laryssa Rod of Somerville, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Ralph S. Rod, age 67, died on June 16, 2005. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, June 21, from 4 until 6:30 p.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.
The funeral and celebration of his life will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Arthritis Foundation in care of the funeral home.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kelsey and Caelin, and his daughter-in-law, Tracy Rod. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
