Leon L. Smith

Leon L. Smith, 89, of 50 Sleepy Hollow Road died Sunday at home.

He was a former town cemetery superintendent and a founder of the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department.

Born in Amherst on Dec. 16, 1915, son of William W. and Mabel Brooks Smith, he was educated in schools there and graduated from Smith Vocational Trade School as an electrician in 1934.

Mr. Smith was employed as a lineman for Richmond Telephone Co. during the 1940s. He also owned and operated the Richmond Service Station as well as his farm in Richmond. In later years, he was employed by the former Berkshire Buick and by Price Chopper on Pittsfield-Lenox Road.

He was a member of Richmond Congregational Church and a 60-year-plus member of the Richmond Grange. He also bowled in the Grange Bowling League.

He was instrumental in obtaining the Volunteer Fire Department's first ambulance.

He was known for plowing with his 1946 Military Power Wagon. He enjoyed baseball, NASCAR and going to races at Lebanon Valley Speedway.

He had wintered in Florida for the past six years.

His first wife, the former Mary V. Wheeler, whom he married Aug. 31, 1941, in Richmond, died April 12, 1995.

He and his wife, the former Joicy Alter Heath, were married Dec. 27, 1995, in Bradenton, Fla.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Ernest L. Smith and Neil L. Smith, both of Richmond, and Paul W. Smith of Pittsfield; two daughters, Gloria D. Morse and Joyce E. Phelps, both of Richmond; 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside service for Leon L. Smith, 89, of Richmond, who died June 12, 2005, will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at Richmond Cemetery by the Rev. Angela Buchauer of Richmond.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department or to the Richmond Town Hall Building Fund, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
