William "Bill" Anthony Mattia, 78, of 29 Terrace Ave., died Friday, June 10, at Berkshire Medical Center after an apparent heart attack.
Born, April 4, 1927, son of Albert W. and Grace Signor Mattia, he was a 1945 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mr. Mattia was a bricklayer for more than 44 years with Local 20, and had been a tender prior to that time, retiring in 1992.
He was active with the Local 20, serving as business agent for more than 19 years, and was named the state's Labor Man of the Year in 1990.
He was director of the former Pittsfield Skyhawks Drum Corps for several years.
He enlisted in the Army in October 1945 and achieved the rank of technician fifth-grade before leaving the service in February 1947.
He enjoyed bingo, spending time at the Ralph Froio Senior Center and playing cards.
He leaves three sons, William A. Mattia of Pittsfield, James G. Mattia of Cheshire, and Robert A. Mattia of Rennselaer, N.Y.; a daughter, Coralie A. Dewey of Stephentown, N.Y.; a sister, Mary E. Meledeo of Pittsfield, and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Kathleen E. Burns, on Jan. 14, 2003.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- William "Bill" Mattia, 78, was called safely home on June 10, 2005. Funeral service and burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery will be private. There are no public calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield 01201, who have been entrusted with the arrangements.
He was predeceased by a brother, Vito A. Mattia, who died as a young boy.
