William H. Ludwig

William H. Ludwig, 91, of 1 Post Road died Sunday, June 5, at home.

Born in Lawrence on June 26, 1913, son of the city's first motorcycle policeman, William Ludwig, and his wife, Clara Haeber Ludwig, he graduated from high school there.

He moved to Lenox in 1998.

Mr. Ludwig was appointed a reserve patrolman with the Lawrence Police Department in 1937. He received his permanent appointment in 1944 while serving with the Army in Europe during World War II.

He started his career as a motorcycle officer. He also was a beat cop, a cruiser operator and a court officer at Essex County Courthouse in Lawrence.

He was a communicant at St. Ann's Church and a communicant and usher at St. Anastasia's Church in St. Augustine, Fla., where he spent winters for many years.

He and his wife, the former Barbara A. Hanley, were married Jan. 25, 1942.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Lisa M. Berkel, with whom he and his wife resided, and Carol Hanley of Charlotte, Vt.; two sons, James A. Ludwig of Niceville, Fla., and William H.J. Ludwig of East Derry, N.H.; a sister, Marion O'Connell of Ayer; 14 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial Mass for William H. Ludwig will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church in Lenox tomorrow, June 8, 2005, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lenox Library Association or HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.

Survivors include two sons-in-law, David Berkel of Lenox and Richard H. Bernstein of Charlotte, Vt.; two daughters-in-law, Kathleen Ludwig of Niceville, Fla., and Anna Ludwig of East Derry, N.H.; his niece, Marion Smith of Ayer, and his sister-in-law, Catherine A. Hanley of Boston. He was a loving role model for his 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He died surrounded by family with the kind assistance of Hospice.
