Carolyn A. "Sue" Bresnahan

Carolyn A. "Sue" Bresnahan, 76, of 163 Imperial Ave. died Thursday afternoon at home after a long illness.

Born in Pittsfield on July 7, 1928, daughter of Dr. William P. Street and Mary Henchey Street, she was a 1945 graduate of St. Joseph's High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, now Elms College, in 1949 and a master's degree in education in 1952 from the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Mrs. Bresnahan taught in the Pittsfield Public School System for 30 years, retiring in 1993. She was a teacher at the former Bartlett and Pomeroy elementary schools, and at Crosby Elementary School.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a former longtime communicant of St. Charles' Church, where she served as a lector and eucharistic minister.

She also formerly taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine at St. Charles and volunteered at its parish bingo.

Mrs. Bresnahan was inducted into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre by Cardinal Bernard Law at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston in 1992. She was a founding member of the Pittsfield Catholic Schools Association and the Berkshire County chapter of the Kidney Foundation. In 1974, she donated a kidney to her son Robert A. Bresnahan.

A Ward I City Democratic Committee member, she served as a delegate to the state Democratic Convention several times. She held several offices and was an active fund-raiser for the Elms Alumnae Association of Berkshire County.

She was a member of the Pittsfield and Massachusetts retired teachers associations.

She collected Santa Claus figurines and Nativity sets. A staunch Red Sox fan, she enjoyed traveling to Fenway Park.

She also visited Ireland several times and enjoyed taking Caribbean cruises.

She and her late husband, John F. Bresnahan Jr., to whom she was married 41 years, were married June 28, 1952.

She leaves two daughters, Caroline M. "Bonnie" Bresnahan of Pittsfield, with whom she lived, and Susan M. Bresnahan-Manzon of Sherborn; two sons, Robert A. Bresnahan of Pittsfield, with whom she lived, and John W. Bresnahan of Pittsfield; two sisters, Sarah L. Hardner of Georgetown, Texas, and Patricia J. Gallagher of Scottsdale, Ariz., and six grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Carolyn A. "Susie"Bresnahan, age 76, died Thursday afternoon at home. Mother-in-law of Jane P. Bresnahan and Gil Manzon, she was the proud "Mum Mum" of Liam J. Bresnahan, Meaghan J. Bresnahan, Patrick E. Bresnahan and Norah S. Bresnahan, Benjamin G. Manzon and GraceMary C. Manzon, and the special "Mum Mum" to Michael C. DiCicco, Casey Leigh DiCicco and Courtney J. DiCicco.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 8:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday at 3 and will conclude with a Legacy Candle Ceremony at 7.

The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Sue and Jack Bresnahan Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Joseph Central High School in care of the funeral home.
