Donald Embree Richardson

Donald Embree Richardson, 91, of Devonshire Estates, formerly of 99 Windsor Ave., Pittsfield, died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Brooklyn N.Y., on April 19, 1914, son of Arthur and Harriet Jaycocks Richardson, he graduated from Brooklyn Technical School, an engineering high school for boys.

He enlisted in the peacetime Army anti-aircraft division, serving from 1933 to 1936. During World War II, he served in the Asiatic theater as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division from 1943 to 1946.

He saw active duty in the Philippines, New Guinea and Okinawa, and served four months with the occupation forces in Japan at the end of World War II.

Mr. Richardson moved to Pittsfield in 1952 and was employed as an insurance salesman for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1977. During that time, he achieved Charter Life Underwriter designation, and was the local union secretary for three years.

Following his retirement, he was a census taker and elections supervisor for the city of Pittsfield for 20 years. After his military service, he worked at Cartier Jewelers on Fifth Avenue in New York.

He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and reading, and was a Red Sox fan.

His wife, the former Ethel Kane, died in 2001.

He leaves two daughters, Norma Richardson and Ellen Richardson, both of Pittsfield; three sons, John Richardson of Pittsfield, Owen Richardson of Pepperell and Mark Richardson of Morrison, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A gathering of friends and family to celebrate the life of Donald Richardson will take place tomorrow, June 3, at 99 Windsor Ave., beginning at noon. Following cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family in Pittsfield Cemetery. WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.

He leaves 10 grandchildren, Amy Richardson of Pittsfield, Justin Richardson of Woolwich, Maine, Michael Richardson of Rockland, David Richardson of Medford, James and Meg Richardson of Pepperell, Jason Richardson of Morrison Colo., Gabriel and Andrew Gorski of Pittsfield, and Jenna Gorski of Boulder, Colo., and a great-granddaughter, Ella Richardson of Woolwich.
