Lena Nicola

Lena Nicola, 91, formerly of 600 Main St., Dalton, died yesterday at Hillcrest Commons, where she had resided since March 2004.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 8, 1913, daughter of Ralph and Anna Spagnuolo Bove, she attended local schools.

She lived in North Adams from 1939 to 1953, when she moved to Dalton.

Mrs. Nicola was a supervisor at the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams for 10 years. She also was employed by the former Berkshire Laundry for five years, retiring in 1975.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Nessacus Middle School library in Dalton.

Her husband, Frank C. Nicola, died Oct. 24, 1977.

She leaves two sisters, Stella Bove of Pittsfield and Janet Merlet of Riverview, Fla.; two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Her daughter, Regina L. Locke, died June 27, 1987.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Lena Bove Nicola will be conducted Monday, May 23, 2005, at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., by the Rev. Dr. Roger A. Davis, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield. Following cremation, burial will take place at Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 10 until the time of the service. Survivors include two grandchildren, Erika L. and Michael J. Locke of Pittsfield; a great-grandchild, Abriana Locke of Peru, and her caregivers Raffaele and Martha Frieri of Pittsfield.

She was predeceased by four sisters, Antoinette Marino, Margaret Evangelisto, Theresa Dean and Mary E. Finizola, and four brothers, James, Richard, Joseph and Anthony Bove. Lena and her sisters took wonderful trips together, enjoyed the social life at River Run Apartments and had many friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dalton Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home.
