Catherine Welch

Catherine Welch, 87, of St. John's Retirement Village in Woodland, Calif., formerly of Dalton, died May 9 at home.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 6, 1917, daughter of Edmund and Rose Gunkel Plummer, she graduated in 1935 from St. Mary's High School in Waltham and attended Simmons College and Oxford University.

Mrs. Welch was editor of the Plastics Division News at GE in Pittsfield.

She also wrote two published novels, "The Rose on the Summit" and "All about Brother Bird," which were Catholic Book Club best sellers. She also wrote numerous short stories.

Her husband, Walter Welch, died in 1981.

She leaves two sons, William Gardner Welch and Jeffry Plummer Welch, both of Davis, Calif.; a daughter, Pamela Welch Jernberg of Worcester; a brother, Edmund Plummer of Pittsfield; three sisters, Mary R. Belland and Rose Huban, both of Pittsfield, and Ruth Fitch Rolanti of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial Mass for Catherine Welch, who died May 9, 2005, will be held Saturday, May 28, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Woodland, Calif. KRAFT BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME in Woodland is in charge of arrangements.

Donations may be made to St. John's Retirement Village, 135 Woodland Ave., Woodland, CA 95695.

Mrs. Welch also leaves several nieces and nephews.
