IdaMay Persson

IdaMay Persson, 80, of 188 North St. died yesterday morning at home after a long struggle with cancer.

She and her husband, Allan H. "Whitey" Persson, owned and operated the Dalton General Store for 50 years. They sold it in 1999.

Born in Medford on Feb. 28, 1925, daughter of Robert F. Ewing Sr. and RagnhildAnderson Ewing, she moved to Pittsfield as a child and was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mrs. Persson was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a fan of the Boston Red Sox and Wahconah Regional High School sports teams.

She and her husband would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary June 3. They were married in St. Joseph's Church in Pittsfield.

Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Peter A. Persson of Cummington; two daughters, Nancy E. Persson of Dalton and Jeanne E. Darby of Keene, Ky.; a sister, Elizabeth Persson, and seven grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for IdaMay Persson, who passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 6, 2005, following a long struggle with cancer, will be Monday, May 9, at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Agnes' Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, May 8, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Persson may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Dalton Ambulance and Rescue, both in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.

Mrs. Persson also leaves her seven grandchildren, Nicholas and Evan Persson, and Lyman, Lucas, Elsa, Eli and Ethan Darby; her daughter-in-law, Sue Persson; her son-in-law, Bryan Darby; her beloved mother-in-law, Elsa Cook of Rome, Ga., and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Ewing Jr. and John Ewing, and by her sister, Nancy Kirby.
