Murray L. Riggs, 84, of 408 Pomeroy Ave. died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center following complications from a recent heart attack.
Born in Richmond, Vt., on Feb. 12, 1921, son of William and Ila Kenyon Riggs, he was a 1939 graduate of Richmond High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, with honors, from the University of Vermont and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts.
He lived in Pittsfield the better part of 50 years.
He received Army advanced technical training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Harvard University, and then joined the Army Signal Corps in 1944 as a second lieutenant during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and in Japan and Korea.
After the war, Mr. Riggs was employed by GE in the radar and power transformer divisions and was manager of quality control and shop operations.
He had assignments in New England, New York City, Canada, Spain and Brazil, retiring with 33 years of service. He also worked as a consultant for many years for General Systems.
He was a member of South Congregational Church and of its Men's Forum, and a member of the ski patrol at Bousquet Ski Area and of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
He was a Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing golf and traveling.
He and his wife, the former Lois Sylvia Brown, were married Aug. 23, 1949.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert S. Riggs of Dallas and Stephen W. Riggs of Pittsfield; two sisters, Jean Glissman of Naples, Fla., and Claire Moran of Essex Junction, Vt.; a brother, Heath L. Riggs of Richmond, Vt., and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Murray L. Riggs will be held at the convenience of the family at Richmond (Vt.) Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.
Calling hours will be today, Tuesday, from 6 to 7 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Among survivors are his daughter-in-law and a large group of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Murray L. Riggs Scholarship Fund at the University of Vermont School of Engineering in care of the funeral home.
