PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Rocco J. "Rocky" Russo, 89, of 250 Dalton Ave. died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Dalton on Jan. 30, 1916, son of Antonio and Mary Lupisella Russo, he moved to Pittsfield at age 3 with his parents and attended local schools.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served on Okinawa and Iwo Jima with the 36th Field Hospital.
Mr. Russo was employed by the former GE in the transportation department and in the former power transformer department for a total of 41 years, retiring in 1975.
He was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a former member of its Holy Name Society, and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, Charles DeAngelus VFW Post 9566 of Dalton, Wahconah Country Club of Dalton and the General Electric Athletic Association, and a former member of VFW Post 448 of Pittsfield.
His wife, the former Lydia E. Sorbara, whom he married Oct. 14, 1939, died March 25, 2001.
He leaves three sons, Anthony R. Russo of Pittsfield, Richard P. Russo of South Deerfield and Edward R. Russo of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a daughter, Patricia A. Russo of Lake Forest, Calif.; four brothers, Albert Russo of Pittsfield, Anthony Russo of Lilburn, Ga., Thomas Russo of Ariel, Wash., and Carmen Russo of Pawleys Island, S.C.; a sister, Mary Pizzuto of Stone Mountain, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Maria Russo-Appel, Tanya Bolston, and Juliana, Torben, Peter, Rocco, Joseph and Olivia Russo, and by three great-grandchildren, Ricky, Sydney and Sophia.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Russo and Frank S. Russo, who died during World War II.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mr. Russo will be Friday, May 6, at 10 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Bencivenga Funeral Home, 5 Elm St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.
Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 5, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
