John J. Zimmerman

John J. Zimmerman, 83, of 266 Appleton Ave. died Wednesday at home.
Born in New York City on June 26, 1921, son of Samuel and Celia Wasserman Zimmerman, he was a graduate of Evander Childs High School in Bronx, N.Y., and of Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he earned the rank of signalman 1st class and served in the Pacific and China seas.
A registered architect, Mr. Zimmerman worked for a number of large New York City firms. He was also in private practice for almost 50 years.
After his retirement, he volunteered for Elder Services and the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires. He delivered Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors after moving to Pittsfield in 1993.
A talented artist, he worked in a variety of media.
His work included sculptures in bronze and marble, paintings in watercolor, oil and acrylic, and stained glass.
His first wife, the former Lucille Feldstein, whom he married Oct. 2, 1942, died Aug. 12, 1975.
He and his wife, the former Mildred Lazerson, were married June 26, 1976.
He leaves two daughters, Trudy Zimmerman of Wayland and Sharon Zimmerman of Westminster; a son, Alan Zimmerman of Oneonta, N.Y.; a brother, Paul Zimmerman of Phillipsport, NY.,; a stepson, Richard Olanoff of Syracuse, N.Y. five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service for John J. Zimmerman will be held Sunday, May 1, at his home at 266 Appleton Ave. The family will sit Shiva following the service.
Among his survivors are his grandchildren, Lindsey and Hannah Zimmerman, Lily Wilson, Adam and Travis Brault; step-granddaughters, Dana and Lynn Olanoff; son-in-law, Timothy Wilson; daughter-in-law, Sara Zimmerman, and many dear cousins.
Donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires in care of the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
