Philip H. Krause, 96, of 2421 Emerald Lake Drive, Sun City Center , Fla., , died Wednesday at LifePath Hospice House in Sun City Center.
He was a member of the Pittsfield School Committee from 1958 to 1961. He was a former Pittsfield resident.
Born in Torrington, Conn., Oct. 26, 1908,son of Edwin and Jessie Nell Krause, and was a graduate of Springfield Technical School, where he was active in sports, including as a No. 7 on an eight-oar shell.
He participated in many races on the Connecticut River. He also attended Springfield Junior College.
During World War II, he was deferred from military service because he was working on a special project at the submarine base in Groton, Conn. Mr. Krause was employed in the engineering department of GE until retiring in 1972.
He was a member of First Baptist Church until 1987, when he moved to Sun City Center, where he was active in United Community Church as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
He also was a Cub Scout master, a tutor at Wimauma (Fla.) Elementary School and a volunteer dance instructor at the Academy of Ballroom Dancein Florida for 12 years.
A fisherman, he tied his own flies and decorated his fishing rods. He also was proficient in calligraphy and oil painting.
His first wife, the former Arabel Browning, died in May 1978.
He and his wife, the former Jean Aldrich McGowen, were married Nov. 25, 1978.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Philip B. Krause of Pittsfield and John E. Krause of Greenfield; a daughter, Joanne Peverett of Kennebunk, Maine; two stepdaughters, Diane Pannesco of Lanesboro and Kathy Dudley of Williamstown; a stepson, Steven J. McGowen of Houston; three grandsons; two great-grandsons; several stepgrandchildren, and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Philip H. Krause, 96, who died April 27, 2005, will be held at Aston Garden, located off Del Webb Blvd. West, Sun City Center, Fla., East and West Del, today, Friday, April 29, at 1. Mr. Krause leaves three grandsons, Peter and Michael Peverett of Maine, and Jeffrey Krause of North Carolina.
