Carl W. Schaefer

Carl W. Schaefer, 87, of 2607 Lake Ridge Circle NW, Rome, Ga., a native of Pittsfield, died Friday at Floyd Medical Center in Rome.
Born on Oct. 15, 1917, son of George and Susanna Eberhardt Schaefer, he was a 1935 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He also graduated from Coyne Electric College in Chicago.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater and in Greenland. He also served during the Korean War.
Mr. Schaefer was employed by GE in the power transformer department in Pittsfield before and after World War II. In 1953, he transferred to the company's Rome plant. An inventor, he developed several patented inventions for the company and was a recipient of several managerial awards.
He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, and the National Rifle Association.
His first wife, the former Emily Nagelschmidt, died in 1974.
His wife, the former Patricia Hovey, died in 1983.
He leaves a son, Robert Schaefer of Rome; two stepdaughters, Valerie Tolbert and Deborah Renfro, both of Rome, and a niece, June Wooliver-Wortman of Hedgesville, W.Va., who was his primary caregiver and court-appointed guardian.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Carl W. Schaefer, a former Pittsfield resident, died in Rome, Ga., on Friday, April 22, 2005. The funeral will be conducted Saturday, April 30, at 11 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Peter Boehringer, pastor of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday, April 30, from 10 to 11 at the funeral home. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and George J. Schaefer, and by two sisters, Henrietta Wooliver and Elsie Tart.
He also leaves several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army in care of the funeral home.
