Walter Chester Gawron

Walter Chester Gawron, 84, a resident of 3 Montgomery Ave. since 1977, died Thursday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield, July 20, 1920, son of Stanley and Mary Mazul Gawron, he was educated in Chatham, N.Y., schools.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served from Nov. 10, 1942, until his discharge Nov. 6, 1945, as a private, first class. He participated in campaigns in the European theater and received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, among other medals.
Mr. Gawron was employed by GE for 39 years, retiring in 1983 as a foreman in the tank department. He also had been a mechanic on the former Boston & Albany Railroad.
He was a member of American Legion Post 68, where he was sergeant at arms and a past honorary district commander, and of the VFW. He also was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs.
He was a Meals on Wheels volunteer for six years and an avid New York Yankees fan, and enjoyed traveling and working on cars.
His wife, the former Mignonne Tremblay, whom he married in 1962, died Jan. 22, 2003.
He leaves a son, Kim W. Gawron of Pittsfield; a daughter, Maggie W. Gawron-Durfee of Pittsfield; a sister, Julia Gross of Chatham, and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Walter C. Gawron, who died Thursday, April 14, 2005, will be conducted Tuesday, April 19, at 10 at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church.
Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, April 18, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsfield North Little League in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
Mr. Gawron also leaves his three grandchildren, Travis Gawron, Dayleen Gawron and Brandon Gawron. He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
