Frances P. O'Brien, 77

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Frances P. O'Brien, 77, formerly of 39 Walchenbach Circle, Salisbury Estates, died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Berkshire Place, 89 South St., where she had resided since January 2004.

Born in North Adams on July 23, 1927, daughter of Domenico and Mary Canale Pappas, she was a 1945 graduate of Drury High School and attended Berkshire Community College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Mrs. O'Brien was employed by New England Telephone Co. in Pittsfield as a group operator services manager from 1962 to 1973. She was chief operator services manager for the Northampton and then Greenfield offices from 1973 until her retirement in 1986.

Earlier in her career, she was a union steward for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

She was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and reading.

She and her husband, Francis T. "Obie" O'Brien, who died Oct. 30, 1981, were married Aug. 2, 1947, in North Adams.

She leaves three sons, Thomas F. O'Brien of West Suffield, Conn., Daniel T. O'Brien of Des Moines, Iowa, and Martin J. O'Brien of Springfield; two daughters-in-law, Katherine O'Brien and Kat O'Brien; four daughters, Maureen Henault and her husband, Raymond, and Kristine Ward and her husband, Dennis, all of Pittsfield, Kathleen Basile and her husband, Richard, of Richmond and Eileen Knight of Durham, Maine; a brother, Dominick G. Papas of Adams; two sisters, Catherine LaBombard of Stamford, Vt., and Mary Valenti of Pittsfield; 13 grandchildren, Renee Cantwell, Michelle Daries, Erin, Megan, Corey, Jamie and Lexie O'Brien, Michael Basile, Cheyenne and Sean Knight, and Kari, Katie and James Ward; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Kali, Nathan, Beyja and Ashley, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Another son, Cornelius E. "Neil" O'Brien, died Oct. 13, 1974. She also was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Pappas and Vincent James Pappas, and four sisters, Theresa Sukel, Josephine Jacquot, Genevieve Champagne and Rose M. Morocco.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mrs. O'Brien will be held Wednesday, April 20, at 9 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 at St. Mark's Church by the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor.

Burial will follow in the family plot at Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, April 19, from 5 to 7.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Berkshire Place or Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts chapter, both in care of the funeral home.
