Blanche S. McQueen

Blanche S. McQueen, 91, of 235 Walker St., Lenox, died Tuesday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

She was a former longtime resident of 106 Sampson Parkway.

Born in Worcester on Feb. 6, 1914, daughter of John and Clara Lagerstrom Stewart, she was a graduate of Worcester High School. She earned a nursing degree from New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and did graduate work at Cook County Hospital Graduate School in Chicago.

Mrs. McQueen was a surgical nurse in the Army Nurse Corps from 1942 to 1945. She was discharged as a first lieutenant after serving in England.

Following the war, she did some private duty nursing.

She was primarily a homemaker.

She was a member of the Pittsfield VFW Post 448, a member of the American Women in Military Service, the American Legion Post 68, and a charter member of the Women Military Service for America in Washington, D.C.

She volunteered as a librarian at Kimball Farms. She enjoyed playing bridge and was bridge teacher.

She traveled to Europe, including England, Ireland and Sweden, and spent much time in Nova Scotia.

Her husband, Captain Cyril P. McQueen, state police officer and former chief of plant protection at GE, whom she married in 1943 in Redding, England, died Nov. 25, 1997.

She leaves a daughter, Kathryn M. Turnrose of Bowie, Md., and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Blanche S. McQueen, R.N., died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in Pittsfield. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 16, at 2 at the DWYER FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Robert Skidmore officiating.

Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Bourne. Calling hours will be Saturday from 1 until the 2 p.m. service. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire County Division of the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.

She was the beloved grandmother of Erik Turnrose and Heather Turnrose Lakey. Mrs. McQueen was a longtime breast cancer survivor.
