Howard M. Shultis

Howard M. Shultis, 86, of 117 Oak Hill Road died Sunday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility, where he had recently resided.
Born in Ogdensburg, N.Y., on Sept. 7, 1918, son of Howard and Alice Messenger, who both died in the influenza epidemic shortly after his birth. He was adopted by Alphonse and Jane Lewis Shultis and was educated in Saugerties, N.Y., schools.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, during the invasions of Sicily and Italy. He was his company's first scout for many months in Italy and received a Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of Monte Cassino. He also earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge among other medals, and was discharged as a corporal in 1945.
Mr. Shultis was employed at Crane & Co. in Dalton. He had earlier worked for many years in radio broadcasting, first with the former Greylock Broadcasting for 20 years as a salesman, and then as general manager of several radio stations, including WKNY in Kingston, N.Y., WKNE in Keene, N.H., and at WBRK AM-1340 from 1964 until 1978.
He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, serving for many years as an usher and on committees, especially the Staff-Parish Relations Committee.
He also had been a member of Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church in Kingston. He was an active member of the Kiwanis International and a former member of the Pittsfield and Kingston VFWs. He enjoyed woodworking.
His first wife, the former Lillian Rae Sullivan, whom he married in 1945, died Oct. 31, 1967.
He and his wife, the former Mary T. Marshall, were married July 18, 1970, in St. Agnes' Church in Dalton.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Candace R. Shultis of Washington, D.C., and a son, John H. Shultis of Fairfax, Va.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Howard M. Shultis, 86, of Pittsfield, who died April 10, 2005, will be conducted Wednesday at 11 at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton by the Rev. Dr. Roger Davis, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield.
Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 10 to 11, prior to the service. He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.
Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home, 890 Main St., Dalton.
