Mabel A. Hiltpold, 89, of Devonshire Estates died Thursday afternoon at Providence Care Center, where she had been a patient for three weeks.
She was a teacher in the Pittsfield School System from 1953 until 1974.
Born in Holyoke on April 26, 1915, daughter of Roswell and Clara Clark Clark, she graduated from the former Classical High School and, in 1937, from American International College, both in Springfield.
She resided at 645 West St., Pittsfield, until moving to Lenox five years ago.
Mrs. Hiltpold had taught Grades 4 and 5 at Egremont School and Grade 6 at the former Plunkett School.
She was a member of South Congregational Church in Pittsfield, where she volunteered at the St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen, and made quilts and crafts for fund-raising projects.
She was a member of the Massachusetts Retired Teachers' Association and a volunteer at Hillcrest Hospital's gift shop. She enjoyed traveling.
Her husband, A. George Hiltpold, whom she married Oct. 15, 1938, died July 21, 1995.
She leaves three sons, Glenn C. Hiltpold of Agawam, Neil A. Hiltpold of Pittsfield and Dean B. Hiltpold of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Wayne E. Clark of Granby; a sister, Verna L. Ziegler of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Mabel A. Hiltpold, who died Thursday, April 7, 2005, will be conducted Wednesday, April 13, at 1 at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Joel Huntington, pastor of South Congregational Church.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Park Cemetery and Mausoleum in Springfield at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Perkins School for the Blind or to St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St.
She is lovingly survived by her eight grandchildren, Glenn Robert Hiltpold, Tina Hiltpold, Debra Wojtkowski, Julie Cole, and Jeffrey, Michael, Eric and Kevin Hiltpold, and by 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her devoted daughter-in-law, Nancy W. Hiltpold.
She was predeceased by three brothers, W. Buckley Clark, Howard L. Clark and Lloyd R. Clark.
