Isabel W. Gilligan, 87, of Devonshire Estates, 239 Pittsfield Road died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
Born in Cobleskill, N.Y., on Sept. 2, 1917, daughter of William and Thirza Barlow Wadsworth, she was a 1935 graduate of Cobleskill High School. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Moravian College in Allentown, Pa., in 1949.
Mrs. Gilligan was an elementary school teacher in the Lenox Public School system from 1961 until her retirement in 1977. Following retirement, she was a substitute teacher at Berkshire Farm Center in Canaan, N.Y. During World War II, she had worked as a lab technician for Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston and later at GE in Pittsfield.
She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and was the director and organist for its youth choir for many years. She was a volunteer for the Lenox Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Kennedy Park Commission in Lenox, where she served as vice chairman and secretary.
She was one of the founders of the former Lenox Women's Democratic Town Committee. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Greenock and Stockbridge country clubs, where she won a number of tournaments. For several years, she was on the board of directors at the Stockbridge club.
Her husband, Edward W. Gilligan, whom she married July 3, 1939, died July 29, 1972.
She leaves a daughter, Kathleen G. McMahon of Richmond; three sons, Mark W. Gilligan of Pittsfield, Kevin E. Gilligan of St. Louis, Mo., and Michael P. Gilligan of Georgetown, Fla., five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Isabel W. Gilligan will be Monday at 10:15 from the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Ann's Church, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 1 to 4 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lenox Library in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Kate Doyle, Shauna McMahon, Kevin McMahon, Megan McMahon and Michaela Gilligan, and her great-grandchildren, Patrick and Ava Doyle.
