Velma H. Swiers, 77, of 22 Williamsburg Terrace died yesterday morning at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in Pittsfield, where she was recently admitted.
Born in Schuyler Lake, N.Y., on July 19, 1927, daughter of Ashlyn M. and Nina Knight Huyck, she came to Pittsfield in 1942 and was a 1945 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mrs. Swiers was employed by the former England Brothers Department store, beginning in 1969 as a salesclerk in the linen department and later in the credit office, from which she retired as supervisor in 1988.
She had earlier worked as a payroll clerk from 1945 to 1954 at GE in Building 33 and later at the main payroll office at 100 Woodlawn Ave.
She attended Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesboro.
Her husband, Willard T. Swiers, whom she married Aug. 1, 1953, died Oct. 23, 1996.
She leaves three daughters, Donna J. Swiers, with whom she resided, and Linda A. Swiers and Karen J. Swiers, both of Pittsfield; and her grandson, Brian C. Swiers, whom she raised from birth.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Velma H. Swiers, who died Monday, April 4, 2005, also leaves her grandson, Brian C. Swiers and his wife, Jessica L. Fitts Swiers, who were married Aug. 21, 2004.
Services for Mrs. Swiers will be held Thursday, April 7, at 1 at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield, with the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel, officiating.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 11 to 1 at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will take place in the spring in Chatham (N.Y.) Rural Cemetery.
