Harold MacArthur "Hal" Booth Jr.

Harold MacArthur "Hal" Booth Jr., 85, of Pomeroy Manor died early Friday morning at Springside Nursing Home of Pittsfield after a brief illness.

Born in Chester, Pa., on Jan. 10, 1920, son of Harold M. and Louise Heuer Booth, he graduated from high school in Gary, Ind.

Mr. Booth enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the start of World War II. He served as a radio operator and gunner on a B-24 in the 2226th Bomber Group in the European theater.

He also was an entertainer in the Air Force Entertainment Group, touring for troops in the Middle East. Later in his career, he was assigned to the 820th Air Group, supporting Strategic Air Command's B-52 forces at the former Plattsburgh (N.Y.) Air Force Base. He retired from the Air Force in 1964 with more than 30 years of service.

After retirement, he traveled extensively, eventually moving to the southern Vermont and Dalton areas. A comedian and singer, he entertained at nursing homes and volunteered for numerous other events. He was a life member of VFW Post 9566.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Renata C. Booth.

His wife, the former Virginia Blanch Russell, to whom he was married 36 years, died Aug. 9, 2001.

He leaves a son, Dennis N. Booth of the state of Florida; a daughter, Louise O. Waller of Naples, Fla.; a brother, Warren Booth of Washingtonville, N.Y.; two stepsons, Richard Ladd of Dalton and David Ladd of Rockford, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Pat Roberts of Charleston, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Mr. Harold M. "Hal" Booth Jr., who died April 1, 2005, will be conducted Tuesday, April 5, at 11 at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Robert Kyte, pastor of Dalton Congregational Church.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. Hal will be remembered for his inexhaustible supply of jokes and for his talent as a singer.

He also leaves a sister-in-law, Doris of Washingtonville, N.Y, and stepdaughters-in-law Judy of Dalton and Candy of Rockford, Ill.
