Mary T. Ano

Mary T. Ano, 76, of 83 Mountainview Terrace, formerly of Oak Street, died Sunday at home.
Born in Dalton on Aug. 5, 1928, daughter of Roy J. and Margaret M. Schepard Ano, she graduated as valedictorian in 1946 from the former Dalton High School.
Miss Ano was employed as a secretary at Wahconah Regional High School from 1975 until retiring in 2003, and had worked for eight principals. Principal Thomas Callahan remembered her as "the mother of our Wahconah family for a quarter of a century." On her retirement, a plaque honoring her was placed in her former office, now a conference room.
She had previously worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Bernard G. Auge for 23 years and as a secretary at Byron-Weston Co.
She was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church.
She was a member of the Dalton Memorial Committee, and an adviser to the Junior Rotarians and to Boys' and Girls' State. She was a Red Sox fan.
She leaves her sister-in-law, Marge Ano, with whom she resided.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mary T. Ano, who died March 27, 2005, will be celebrated Friday, April 1, at 11 at St. Agnes' Church by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. There will be no calling hours. Following the service, the family will greet friends at a reception at Wahconah Country Club. Interment of her ashes will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes' Church, or to the Wahconah Regional High School Scholarship Fund in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. She was predeceased by her brothers, Robert in 1969 and Richard in 2000.
She was a loving aunt to Vicky and Richard, Patricia and Alan, Christine and Garry, David and Bethany, Jeffrey and Stefanie, and Thomas and Karen. She leaves 10 great-nieces and -nephews, and a great-great-niece. She also is survived by numerous cousins, including attorney Michael Shepard and his children, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Meredith and Michelle, and his stepchildren, Steve and Katie Hornbeck. She also leaves a very special friend, Leah Thiss of Poway, Calif., and nine godchildren.
Principal Callahan also described her as professional secretary and an exemplary person; her office at the school had been described as ‘a sanctuary of sorts.'
