Dorothy Ruth Van Vorst

Dorothy Ruth Van Vorst, 90, of Buel Street, died yesterday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Curwensville, Pa., on Feb. 1, 1915, daughter of Harvey O. and Eva Viola Diebert Dietrich, she attended Norristown, Pa., schools, and was a 1930 graduate of Norristown High School.

She earned her bachelor's degree in music in 1934 from New York University and took graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also resided in Slippery Rock, Pa., and New Lebanon, N.Y., until moving to Pittsfield in 1969.

Mrs. Van Vorst was an instructor in piano at Darrow School in New Lebanon from 1942 until retiring in 1969. Earlier, she was a music instructor for schools in the Philadelphia area. After retiring, she was an organist at the former Notre Dame Church and on the faculty of Berkshire Music School. She also gave private piano lessons.

Her husband, John A. Van Vorst, whom she married Dec. 26, 1939, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Norristown, died June 28, 1993.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

She considered music her greatest enjoyment, but also enjoyed gardening, knitting, sewing and reading.

She leaves two sons, Jonathan J. Van Vorst of Pittsfield and Cornelis Van Vorst of Nantucket; a daughter, Adrienne Van Vorst-Cheda of Norton; a sister, Florence Brewer of State College, Pa.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Mrs. Dorothy Ruth Dietrich Van Vorst, who died March 9, 2005, will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield at a date and time to be announced.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240, which is in charge of the arrangements.
