Earl S. Hedding

Earl S. Hedding, 77, of Water Street, North Bennington, Vt., father of Wayne Hedding of Pittsfield, died Friday at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vt., after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Born at home in North Bennington on July 14, 1927, son of Maynard and Gertrude Colvin Hedding, he was a graduate of the former North Bennington High School, where he played basketball and was a pitcher on the baseball team.
A World War II Navy veteran, he served as a seaman, first class.
In earlier years, Mr. Hedding worked as a bus driver and at a diner in Arlington. He also worked for Dwyer's Gas Service in North Bennington, Tansitor Electronics in Bennington and the former Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury, Vt., from which he retired.
Following his retirement, he was employed by North Bennington Elementary School as a crossing guard.
He was a former member of American Legion Post 13, a life member of the North Bennington Fire Department, a former Boy Scout master and a Little League coach.
He enjoyed NASCAR, going to Lebanon Valley Speedway in New York, woodworking and working in his yard with his garden tractor.
He also enjoyed traveling throughout Vermont, photography, camping, hunting and fishing.
He and his wife, the former Joyce White, were married Oct. 25, 1947, in North Bennington.
Besides his wife and son, he leaves a daughter, Beverly Hedding of North Bennington; and two sisters, Evelyn Steinis of Shelton, Conn., and Elaine Dalton of Shaftsbury.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside committal service for Earl S. Hedding, who died March 4, 2005, will be held at the family lot in Grandview Cemetery at a time to be announced in the spring.
There will be no callings hours. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the North Bennington Fire Department, the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund, the Alzheimer's Association or the Vermont Diabetes Association through MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201, which is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hedding leaves his daughter-in-law, Carol, and two nieces and two nephews. A sister, Edna Hedding, is deceased.
