Jeanne L. Brown

Jeanne L. Brown, 88, of Pine Hill at Kimball Farms died Saturday morning at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center, where she had been a patient for two weeks.

Born in Albany, N.Y., on Oct. 31, 1916, daughter of Abe and Sadie Lerner, she graduated from high school there. She was a resident of Riverdale, N.Y., for much of her life.

She moved to Lenox in 1996.

A Women's Army Corps veteran of World War II, she served from 1943 to 1946. She was a recruiter in Pennsylvania for much of that time and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain.

A homemaker, Mrs. Brown volunteered in the Bronx School System for many years, teaching remedial reading.

She enjoyed classical music and was a loyal supporter of the Marlboro Music Festival in Marlboro, Vt., where she and her husband built a vacation home.

She also enjoyed gardening and taking nature walks.

She and her husband, Dr. George Brown, who also was in the military, were married Jan. 2, 1944. Dr. Brown died Nov. 6, 1998.

She leaves a daughter, Hillary A. Brown of New York City; a son, Dr. Richard A. Brown of Amherst, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Mrs. Jeanne L. Brown, who died March 5, 2005, will be private and at a later date. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Eliot W. and Nicholas E. Brown, both of Amherst.

The omission of flowers is requested. Donations in Mrs. Brown's memory may be made to the Marlboro Music Festival in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240, which is in charge of arrangements.
