Margaret Elizabeth "Ma" Barry

Margaret Elizabeth "Ma" Barry, 82, of 174 Eleanor Road died Monday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.

She taught math and chemistry at Taconic High School for 20 years, retiring in 1994.

Born in Pittsfield on March 30, 1922, daughter of David J. and Jennifer Friehoffer Tierney, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the former Our Lady of the Elms College, now Elms College, and a master's degree from the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

During World War II, she was employed by GE as an engineer.

Mrs. Barry also taught at the former Pomeroy School for two years, at Pittsfield High School for four years and at St. Joseph's High School for eight years.

She was a communicant of St. Mark's Church.

She enjoyed reading, especially Reader's Digest, to which she had subscribed for 50 years.

Her husband, Thomas D. Barry, whom she married in 1946, died March 31, 1990.

She leaves four sons, Dr. Thomas P. Barry of Templeton, Calif., and William M. Barry, Stephen D. Barry and John J. Barry, all of Pittsfield; a daughter, Maryjane Johnson of Ashfield; four sisters, Grace Jones of the state of Florida, Patricia Campbell of Morristown, Ill., Constance Coughlin of New Hampshire and Rosemary Brennan of Marblehead; 10 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Another daughter, Ann E. Barry, died in 1979.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Margaret Elizabeth "Ma'' Barry will be Friday, March 4, at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mark's Church celebrated by the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Taconic High School to establish a math and science award, in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St.

She also leaves her son-in-law, Steve Johnson, and her daughters-in-law, Marlee Champoux Barry and Janice Farrell Barry.
