Albert M. Haskins Sr.

Albert M. Haskins Sr., 93, of 68 Oswald Ave., formerly of Barefoot Bay, Fla., died yesterday morning at Hillcrest Commons.

He was also a former longtime resident of 15 Boylston St.

Born in Springfield, N.Y., on Dec. 23, 1911, son of Albert E. and Mary Ellen Murray Haskins, he moved to Pittsfield as a child and was a 1931 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he played on the basketball and football teams and was a letterman in football.

He was a 40-year veteran of the Armed Forces, serving with the Army during World War II and as an active reservist with the Massachusetts 94th Infantry Division and other reserve units until 1971. He retired with the rank of major.

Mr. Haskins was employed as a production logistic coordinator at GE for 26 years, retiring in 1974. He served as a steward for Local 254 and was an elected member of its executive board. He was presented an honorary life membership from the union upon retirement. He also worked at Western Mass. Electric Co. for 11 years before World War II.

He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church. While in Florida, where he had lived since 1976, he attended St. Luke's Church in Micco. While a member of the Boys' Club, he was a member of the swim team and worked as a counselor at its summer camp.

He was a certified Red Cross senior life saver, a member of the Boys Scouts of America and, after his retirement, served as Scout leader of St. Teresa's Troop 273.

Mr. Haskins was a member of the Irish-American Club, the Barefoot Bay Golf and Country Club, the Barefoot Bay Men's Golf Club, the homeowners' association of Barefoot Bay and American Legion Post 366, where he was a past commander. While in Pittsfield, he was a member of American Legion Post 68.

An accomplished musician, he played the bass, bass violin and violin and was a member of Musicians Local 109.

He played with local bands from 1937 until the 1950s and with local combos until 1974.

He and his wife, the former Helen E. Miller, celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary Sept. 4.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Albert M. Haskins Jr. of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; two daughters, Patricia L. Hunter of Pittsfield and Sharon L. Zepko of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; two sisters, Barbara Clary of Pittsfield and Norma Formel of Lenox; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Albert M. Haskins, 93, who died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, will be Wednesday at 9:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mark's Church celebrated by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor.

Burial will full military honors will follow in Main Street Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3 to 6 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.

He was predeceased by a brother, Murray E. Haskins, and a sister, Helen Wade.
