James A. "Digger" Dougherty

James A. "Digger" Dougherty, 68, of 10 Clifford St. died Monday afternoon at home after a brief illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 22, 1937, son of Francis and Hazel Bryant Dougherty, he attended local schools.
An auto mechanic, Mr. Dougherty owned and operated Digger's Service Station on upper North Street for 30 years. He retired from Astro Beef Co. in 1999.
He was a communicant of St. Charles' Church.
He was a member of the Irish American Organization and the Itam Dandelion Eaters.
He enjoyed lighthouses, the beach, gardening and traveling to Ireland.
He and his wife, the former Lorraine Moretti, were married Aug. 25, 1956, in Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, William M. Dougherty of Pittsfield, James P. Dougherty of Wake Forest, N.C., and Shawn P. Dougherty of Lee; a brother, Thomas F. Dougherty of Pittsfield; two sisters, Mary Frieri of Pittsfield and Theresa Delphia of Springfield, and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for James A. "Digger" Dougherty died in Pittsfield on Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, will be Friday, Feb. 25, at 11:15 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at noon at St. Charles' Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be tomorrow, Feb. 24, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home. Beloved grandfather to Jennifer, Sara and Brittany, and father-in-law to Wendy Emmonds Dougherty and Jean Anello Dougherty.
He also leaves many sisters- and brothers-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, William Dougherty, and a sister, Joan Armstrong.
