Charles H. Martin Jr., 84, of 10 Dodge Ave. died Friday night at Providence Care Center in Lenox.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 7, 1920, son of Charles H. Martin Sr. and Mary Ann Volin Martin, he was a 1938 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he was a star baseball player. He later played first base in the former City League.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a mate aboard the USS LST-244 and participated in five invasions throughout the South Pacific.
A carpenter, Mr. Martin was employed by several area contractors before starting his own company, Charles H. Martin Jr. Contractors, in 1950. Primarily a homebuilder, he retired in 1985 and performed small remodeling jobs for family and friends.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of its Holy Name Society, and collected for the Stewardship Appeal for more than 30 years.
He also was responsible for the construction of the church's annual festival booths and their maintenance until his illness. In 1996, he received the church's Volunteer of the Year award.
He and his wife, the former Lois R. Gleason, were married Sept. 1, 1945.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Rosemary A. Brighenti, Carol A. Martin and Joan M. Rustic, all of Pittsfield; a sister, Dorothy Dudley of Pittsfield; six granddaughters, and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Charles H. Martin Jr., 84, was called safely home on Feb. 11, 2005. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be tomorrow, Feb. 15, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church in care of the funeral home. He also is survived by his granddaughters, Sandra Trembley, Karen Petell, Meiissa Cultrera, Lorie Rustic, Michelle Kroboth and Renee Desaulniers; his four great-grandsons, Logan, Owen, James and Ryan; his great-granddaughter, Payton; his sons-in-law, Thomas Brighenti and Darryl J. Rustic, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn, and a brother, George.
