F. William "Bill" Michaels

F. William "Bill" Michaels, 85, of 90 Euclid Ave. died Monday afternoon at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility, where he was admitted 10 days ago.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 30, 1919, son of Fred V. and Elizabeth M. Killian Michaels, he was a 1937 graduate of St. Joseph's High School, where he played varsity baseball.

He also participated in semi-pro baseball and basketball.

An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served in Manchester, N.H., and Newfoundland. He was discharged in 1946 as a technical sergeant.

Mr. Michaels was employed by the Berkshire Center for Families and Children for 10 years, until 1989. Prior to that, he was secretary and treasurer of the former Union Federal Savings and Loan Association for 10 years, then controller at the former Seyffer Ford Sales Inc. for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

At one time, he was involved in real estate for the Dwyer Agency.

He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member, past president and treasurer of its Holy Name Society. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club and the Ralph Froio Senior Center.

He also served on the United Way's campaigns and on its budget committee. He coached CYC basketball and Little League.

He and his wife, the former Veronica M. "Ronnie" Brown, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary April 7. They were married in Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon, N.Y.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Patricia A. Codey of Pittsfield; a son, William C. Michaels of Dalton, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- F. William "Bill" Michaels died in Pittsfield on Monday, Jan. 31, 2005. The funeral will be tomorrow, Feb. 3, at 10 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 in St. Mark's Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Feb. 2, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Church or the Froio Senior Center in care of the funeral home. Beloved grandfather to Patrick, Christine, Kevin and Caterine Codey, and Maureen and Erin Michaels; loving great-grandfather to Colin and Peyton Doyle, and Kiera, Jenna and Kaden Codey.

He also leaves his son-in-law, John Codey.
